Barbell Seated Twist

The barbell seated twist is a seated trunk-rotation exercise performed with a light barbell supported across the upper back and shoulders. It primarily trains the obliques and other abdominal muscles while building controlled rotational strength and torso stability. It can support core-strength and movement-control goals.

Instructions

  1. Set up safely: Sit upright on a stable flat bench with both feet planted firmly on the floor. Place a light barbell across your upper back and shoulders, not on your neck, and hold it securely with both hands.
  2. Brace: Lengthen your spine, keep your chest up, and gently brace your abdominal muscles. Keep your hips and feet facing forward.
  3. Rotate: Exhale as you slowly rotate your torso to one side through a comfortable range, moving your shoulders and rib cage together without jerking.
  4. Return and repeat: Inhale as you return to center, then rotate to the other side. Use a light load and stop if the movement causes sharp pain or discomfort.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the load light: This exercise is for controlled rotation, not maximum weight.
  2. Avoid forcing range: Turn only as far as you can while keeping your spine tall and hips stable.
  3. Move smoothly: Do not bounce, twist rapidly, or use momentum to move the bar.
