Barbell Preacher Curl

The barbell preacher curl is an isolation exercise performed with the upper arms supported on a preacher bench while curling a barbell. It primarily trains the biceps through controlled elbow flexion and supports arm-strength and muscle-building goals. The bench limits body swing, helping keep tension focused on the arms.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up the preacher bench so your armpits rest near the top edge of the pad and your chest stays supported.
  2. Hold a barbell with an underhand, shoulder-width grip. Place your upper arms flat against the pad and begin with elbows almost straight.
  3. Exhale and curl the bar upward by bending only at the elbows. Keep your wrists neutral and your upper arms in contact with the pad.
  4. Pause briefly when the biceps are fully contracted, without lifting your elbows or leaning back.
  5. Inhale and lower the bar slowly until the elbows are nearly straight. Do not forcefully lock out or let the weight drop.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load. Excessive weight often pulls the shoulders forward or forces the elbows off the pad.
  2. Control the bottom position. Keep a slight bend in the elbows rather than snapping into a hard lockout.
  3. Keep the wrists stacked. Avoid bending them back as you curl; reduce the load if wrist position cannot be maintained.
