Barbell Jefferson Squat

The Barbell Jefferson Squat is a standing barbell squat performed while straddling the bar with a staggered, angled stance. It primarily develops the quadriceps and glutes while challenging hip stability, core bracing, and coordination. It can support lower-body strength and controlled unilateral-style loading.

Instructions

  1. Set up the barbell on the floor with a light, balanced load. Stand over its center with one foot in front of the bar and the other behind it, using a comfortable staggered stance.
  2. Grip the bar with one hand in front of your body and the other behind it. Bend your knees and hips, keep your chest tall, and brace your abdomen before lifting.
  3. Stand up smoothly by driving through both feet and extending your knees and hips. Keep the bar close to your body and resist excessive twisting through the torso.
  4. Lower under control by bending at the hips and knees until the bar returns softly to the floor. Keep your spine neutral, then reset your position before the next repetition.

Technique tips

  1. Start light. The offset position creates rotational demands, so learn the movement before increasing load.
  2. Keep pressure through both feet. Do not let the front or rear foot lose contact with the floor.
  3. Brace before each repetition. Keep your ribs and pelvis controlled rather than twisting to lift the bar.
