Decline Oblique Crunch

The decline oblique crunch is a bodyweight abdominal exercise performed on a decline bench with a controlled trunk curl and rotation toward one side. It primarily targets the obliques while also training the rectus abdominis. It can support core strength, trunk control, and abdominal muscular endurance.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up the bench: Adjust a decline bench securely and place your feet under the foot pads. Lie on your back with your hips and lower back supported.
  2. Choose your arm position: Lightly place your fingertips beside your ears or cross your arms over your chest. Do not pull on your neck.
  3. Brace: Exhale gently, tighten your abdominal muscles, and keep your lower back comfortably controlled against the bench.
  4. Crunch and rotate: Lift your shoulder blades from the bench while rotating your rib cage toward one side. Keep the movement slow and let the torso, rather than the elbow, lead the rotation.
  5. Return with control: Lower until your shoulder blades approach the bench, maintaining abdominal tension. Complete the chosen repetitions on one side, then perform the same number on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the range controlled: A small, deliberate curl and rotation is more useful than trying to sit fully upright.
  2. Protect the neck: Keep space between your chin and chest, and use your hands only for light support.
  3. Avoid momentum: Do not swing the torso or bounce off the bench; slow the lowering phase.
  4. Train both sides evenly: Use the same range of motion and number of repetitions on each side.
