Bench Rotational Crunch

The bench rotational crunch is a bodyweight abdominal exercise performed lying on a bench and curling the torso upward with controlled rotation. It primarily targets the abdominals and obliques while supporting core strength, trunk control, and rotational coordination. The bench can provide a consistent setup and room for controlled movement.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up on a stable flat bench, lying face up with your hips and lower back supported. Bend your knees and place your feet securely on the floor or bench as your setup allows.
  2. Position your hands lightly beside your head or across your chest. Keep your neck long and avoid pulling on your head.
  3. Brace your core by gently drawing your ribs toward your pelvis. Exhale as you lift your shoulder blades from the bench.
  4. Rotate your torso smoothly toward one side, bringing the opposite shoulder toward that knee without forcing the range.
  5. Return slowly to the bench with control, then repeat to the other side. Alternate sides evenly for the desired repetitions.
  6. Stay controlled throughout; stop if you feel sharp pain or if the bench becomes unstable.

Technique tips

  1. Lead with your ribs and shoulders, not your elbows; the rotation should come from your trunk.
  2. Keep the lower back supported and use a small, controlled curl rather than sitting fully upright.
  3. Move slowly on both the lift and return to avoid using momentum.
  4. Exhale during the curl and rotation, then inhale as you return.
