Bodyweight Side Lunge

The bodyweight side lunge is a lateral lower-body movement in which you shift into one hip while keeping the other leg extended. It primarily trains the quadriceps and glutes while challenging hip mobility, balance, and leg control. It supports lower-body strength, movement quality, and athletic change-of-direction capacity.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with your feet wider than hip width, toes pointing mostly forward, and your chest lifted.
  2. Shift your weight to one side and bend that knee, sending your hips back as if sitting into the hip.
  3. Keep the working foot flat and the knee tracking in line with its toes; keep the opposite leg long without locking it forcefully.
  4. Lower only as far as you can while maintaining a neutral spine and control, then press through the bent-leg foot to return to standing.
  5. Repeat on the other side with a smooth, controlled tempo.

Technique tips

  1. Keep your heel down on the bent-leg side; avoid letting the foot roll inward or lift.
  2. Move the hips back rather than allowing the knee to travel inward toward the midline.
  3. Use a comfortable range and reduce depth if you lose balance, spinal position, or knee alignment.
