Three-Way Lunge

The three-way lunge is a bodyweight lower-body exercise that combines forward, lateral, and reverse lunges from one standing position. It primarily trains the quadriceps and glutes while challenging hip mobility, balance, and single-leg control. It can support lower-body strength, coordination, and movement variety.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Start standing tall with your feet hip-width apart, chest lifted, and abdomen gently braced.
  2. Step forward with one foot and lower into a forward lunge, keeping the front knee aligned with the toes and the back knee pointing toward the floor.
  3. Push through the front foot to return to the starting position, then step the same foot out to the side and sit the hips back into a lateral lunge; keep the other leg straighter.
  4. Return to standing, then step the same foot behind you into a reverse lunge. Lower under control while keeping the torso upright and the front knee tracking over the toes.
  5. Push back to standing to complete one repetition. Perform the planned repetitions on one side, then repeat the sequence with the other leg.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the knee aligned with the toes rather than letting it collapse inward.
  2. Use a controlled step and return; do not rush between directions.
  3. Choose a step length that lets you keep the whole front foot firmly on the floor.
  4. Exhale as you push back to standing, and reduce the depth if you cannot maintain balance or alignment.
