Lateral Stepover

The lateral stepover is a side-to-side stepping exercise performed over a low platform. It primarily trains the quadriceps, glutes, and calves while developing lower-body coordination and balance. It can support leg endurance and general conditioning.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Place a stable, low step platform on a level, non-slip surface.
  2. Stand sideways beside the platform with feet about hip-width apart and your chest lifted.
  3. Step the foot nearest the platform onto its center, then bring the other foot over so you stand on the platform.
  4. Step down to the opposite side, landing softly with control, then bring the other foot down.
  5. Continue stepping back and forth at a controlled pace, keeping your knees aligned with your toes.
  6. Keep your torso tall and use a lower platform or slower tempo if balance or control is lost.

Technique tips

  1. Use the whole foot: place it fully on the platform rather than balancing on the edge.
  2. Control each landing: avoid jumping off or letting the knees collapse inward.
  3. Choose an appropriate height: begin low enough to step smoothly without hip or knee discomfort.
  4. Breathe naturally and keep the pace consistent rather than rushing repetitions.
