Cable Standing Shoulder Press

The cable standing shoulder press is a vertical pressing exercise performed while standing against cable resistance. It primarily trains the shoulders and triceps while requiring controlled trunk stability, supporting upper-body pressing strength and coordination.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set the cable pulleys around shoulder height and attach handles.
  2. Stand tall between or facing the cables, holding the handles at shoulder level with palms facing forward.
  3. Brace your abdomen, keep your ribs stacked over your pelvis, and start with wrists aligned over elbows.
  4. Press the handles overhead until your arms are nearly straight without shrugging your shoulders.
  5. Lower the handles slowly back to shoulder level, then repeat with control.

Technique tips

  1. Use a load that allows a smooth, controlled path throughout each repetition.
  2. Avoid leaning backward or flaring the ribs to finish the press.
  3. Keep your forearms close to vertical as you press to maintain wrist and elbow alignment.
  4. Stop the range of motion if you cannot press without compensating through the lower back.
