Cable One-Arm Pulley Side Bend

The cable one-arm pulley side bend is a standing isolation exercise performed beside a low cable pulley. It primarily trains the obliques through controlled side bending while the cable provides consistent resistance. It can help develop lateral core strength and trunk control.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set a cable pulley low and attach a single handle. Stand side-on to the stack, with the working arm farther from the machine.
  2. Grasp the handle with the outside hand and step away until there is light tension. Stand tall with feet about hip-width apart, knees soft, and the arm straight at your side.
  3. Brace your trunk and keep your shoulders and hips facing forward. Let the cable gently draw your torso toward the machine without twisting or leaning forward.
  4. Exhale and bend away from the machine by contracting the obliques on the working side. Keep the arm long and move only through a comfortable sideways range.
  5. Pause briefly at the end of the side bend without rotating the torso or lifting the shoulder.
  6. Inhale and return slowly to the upright starting position under control. Complete all repetitions, then turn around and repeat on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Use a light, controllable load. Excessive weight often causes rotation, shoulder movement, or a jerking return.
  2. Move through the torso, not the hips. Keep the pelvis level and avoid shifting it sideways to create extra range.
  3. Keep the arm relaxed and straight. Do not pull the handle with the arm; it simply transfers cable resistance to the trunk.
  4. Match both sides. Use the same load, range of motion, and repetitions on each side.
