Machine Rotary Torso

The machine rotary torso is a seated rotational strength exercise performed against machine resistance. It primarily trains the obliques, with the abdominal wall helping stabilize the torso and pelvis. It can support core strength and controlled rotational movement when performed through a comfortable range of motion.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Adjust the machine so the seat, chest pad, thigh pads, and rotation range fit your body; select a light resistance.
  2. Sit tall with your back supported as intended by the machine, feet planted, and thighs secured beneath the pads.
  3. Place your arms or hands on the designated pads or handles, brace your abdomen, and keep your hips facing forward.
  4. Exhale and rotate your torso smoothly against the resistance without jerking or twisting from the hips.
  5. Pause briefly at a comfortable end range, then inhale and return slowly to the start under control.
  6. Complete the planned repetitions on one side, then adjust or repeat on the other side as the machine design requires; stop if you feel sharp pain or discomfort.

Technique tips

  1. Use a light load first. Choose resistance that allows slow, controlled motion without using momentum.
  2. Keep the pelvis stable. Let the torso rotate while the hips and thighs remain secured by the pads.
  3. Do not force range of motion. Use only a comfortable rotation and avoid bouncing at the end position.
  4. Control the return. Resist the weight on the way back instead of allowing the stack to pull you around.
