Cable Side Bend

The cable side bend is a standing trunk lateral-flexion exercise performed using a low cable pulley. It primarily trains the obliques, with the lower back assisting to control the movement. It can support core strength, trunk control, and stability for everyday movement and strength training.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set a cable pulley to its lowest position and attach a single handle. Select a light load that allows controlled trunk movement.
  2. Stand sideways to the pulley with feet about hip-width apart. Hold the handle in the hand nearest the machine, arm long by your side, and step out until the cable has light tension.
  3. Brace your abdomen, keep your chest lifted, and maintain a neutral head and neck. Keep your hips facing forward and your knees softly bent.
  4. Slowly bend your torso away from the pulley without twisting, rotating the hips, or pulling with the arm.
  5. Use your obliques to return to an upright position, exhaling as you rise. Pause under control, complete the repetitions, then repeat evenly on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the movement small and deliberate. Lateral flexion should come from the torso, not from shifting the hips sideways.
  2. Do not twist or lean forward. Keep both shoulders stacked and the pelvis facing forward throughout each repetition.
  3. Use a manageable load. If you must jerk the cable, bend the knees deeply, or pull with the arm, reduce the weight.
