Kettlebell Military Press

The kettlebell military press is a standing overhead pressing exercise, commonly performed with one kettlebell at a time. It primarily trains the shoulders and triceps while requiring core stability and controlled overhead positioning. It supports upper-body pressing strength, shoulder control, and balanced unilateral strength development.

Instructions

  1. Set up: Stand tall with feet about hip-width apart. Clean one kettlebell to the rack position, with the bell resting near the outside of the forearm and the wrist neutral.
  2. Brace: Squeeze the handle, tighten your abdomen and glutes, and keep your ribs stacked over your pelvis. Keep the working elbow slightly in front of the body.
  3. Press: Exhale as you press the kettlebell upward in a controlled path. Allow the forearm to rotate so the bell finishes comfortably behind the forearm rather than pulling the wrist back.
  4. Lock out: Finish with the arm straight overhead, the biceps near the ear, and the shoulder actively stable. Do not lean back or flare the ribs.
  5. Lower and repeat: Inhale as you lower the kettlebell slowly to the rack position. Complete the desired repetitions, then perform the same number on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the load manageable: Use a kettlebell that lets you keep your torso upright and your wrist neutral throughout every repetition.
  2. Do not turn it into a backbend: Brace before each press and stop the set if you need to lean backward to reach overhead.
  3. Control the descent: Lowering slowly to the rack position improves control and prevents the kettlebell from dropping onto the forearm.
  4. Match both sides: Use the same load and number of repetitions on each side, beginning with the less comfortable side when appropriate.
