Kettlebell One-Arm Jerk

The kettlebell one-arm jerk is an explosive overhead lift performed from the rack position using a leg drive and a quick catch under the kettlebell. It primarily develops the shoulders and triceps while strongly involving the legs, glutes, and core for power transfer and stability. It supports overhead strength, total-body power, coordination, and kettlebell sport conditioning.

Instructions

  1. Clean the kettlebell to the rack position on one side: keep the wrist neutral, elbow close to the body, and feet about hip-width apart.
  2. Brace the abdomen, keep the chest tall, and make a short, controlled dip by bending the knees while keeping the heels down.
  3. Drive forcefully through the legs and hips to send the kettlebell upward; keep the arm relaxed until the kettlebell has momentum.
  4. Quickly dip under the kettlebell into a shallow split or squat stance, then straighten the arm to catch it overhead with the elbow locked.
  5. Stand fully upright with the kettlebell stacked over the shoulder and hip, maintaining a neutral wrist and stable torso.
  6. Lower the kettlebell under control to the rack position, reset your balance, and repeat. Perform equal work on both sides.

Technique tips

  1. Use leg drive: the jerk is not a strict press; let the legs create most of the initial upward force.
  2. Keep the kettlebell close: avoid swinging it away from the body, which can strain the shoulder and waste energy.
  3. Lock out with control: finish only when the elbow is straight, the wrist is neutral, and the torso is stable.
  4. Start with a manageable kettlebell and stop the set if you cannot maintain a secure overhead position.
