Cable V Bar Pulldown

The Cable V-Bar Pulldown is a vertical pulling exercise performed on a cable lat-pulldown machine using a close, neutral-grip V handle. It primarily trains the latissimus dorsi and upper back, with the biceps and forearms assisting. It supports back strength, pulling control, and upper-body muscle development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up the machine: Attach a V handle to the high cable and select a load that allows controlled repetitions.
  2. Take position: Sit facing the machine, secure your thighs beneath the pads, and grasp the handle with palms facing each other. Keep your feet flat and torso tall.
  3. Set your shoulders: Brace your abdomen, lift your chest slightly, and pull your shoulder blades down without leaning far backward.
  4. Pull down: Drive your elbows down and back to bring the handle toward your upper chest. Keep the handle close to your body and avoid jerking.
  5. Return with control: Slowly allow the handle to rise until your arms are nearly straight and your shoulders are controlled overhead.
  6. Repeat safely: Maintain a neutral spine throughout and stop the set if you cannot control the weight or feel sharp discomfort.

Technique tips

  1. Lead with the elbows: Think about pulling your elbows toward your ribs rather than pulling with your hands.
  2. Do not swing: Keep your torso mostly upright; excessive backward lean turns the movement into a different pulling pattern.
  3. Use full control: Avoid letting the weight stack slam at the top or bottom of a repetition.
  4. Choose an appropriate load: Reduce the weight if your shoulders rise sharply or you cannot reach the upper chest with control.
