Dumbbell Upright Row

The dumbbell upright row is a standing pulling exercise in which the dumbbells are lifted close to the body toward the upper chest. It primarily trains the shoulders, especially the deltoids, with meaningful involvement from the upper traps and biceps. It can support shoulder strength and upper-body muscle development when performed with controlled range of motion.

Instructions

  1. Set up: Stand tall with feet about hip-width apart, holding a dumbbell in each hand in front of your thighs with palms facing your body.
  2. Brace: Keep your chest tall, neck neutral, and abdomen gently braced. Let the dumbbells hang close to your thighs.
  3. Pull upward: Exhale and draw the dumbbells upward close to your torso, leading with your elbows. Keep your wrists neutral and your elbows below or roughly level with shoulder height.
  4. Use a comfortable top position: Stop when the dumbbells reach the upper chest or before shoulder discomfort occurs. Do not force the elbows excessively high.
  5. Lower with control: Inhale and slowly return the dumbbells along the same close path to the starting position.
  6. Repeat safely: Maintain an upright torso without swinging or shrugging excessively, and use a load that allows smooth, pain-free repetitions.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the load light to moderate: Use a weight you can lift without leaning back, swinging, or pulling with momentum.
  2. Respect shoulder comfort: A lower stopping point is appropriate if raising the elbows higher creates pinching or discomfort.
  3. Lead with the elbows: Keep the dumbbells close to the body rather than letting them drift forward.
  4. Control breathing: Exhale during the upward pull and inhale as you lower the dumbbells slowly.
