Dumbbell Incline Shoulder Raise

The incline dumbbell shoulder raise is an isolation exercise performed chest-down on an incline bench while lifting dumbbells out to the sides. It primarily trains the deltoids, particularly the rear and middle portions, while supporting shoulder control and upper-body muscle development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set the bench to a low-to-moderate incline and choose light dumbbells that can be controlled throughout the movement.
  2. Lie chest-down on the bench with your feet firmly on the floor, arms hanging beneath your shoulders, and palms facing each other.
  3. Brace your torso and keep a soft bend in the elbows. Lift both dumbbells out to the sides in a smooth arc without shrugging.
  4. Stop when your upper arms are approximately level with your torso or when you can maintain a neutral shoulder position.
  5. Lower slowly until the arms hang beneath the shoulders, keeping tension controlled, then repeat.

Technique tips

  1. Use a light load. Momentum shifts work away from the deltoids and can make shoulder positioning harder to control.
  2. Keep your neck long and avoid lifting the shoulders toward the ears.
  3. Move within a pain-free range and lower each repetition more slowly than you lift it.
