Dumbbell Rear Delt Row

The dumbbell rear delt row is a bent-over rowing movement performed with the elbows flared outward to emphasize the rear deltoids and upper back. It helps build shoulder balance, upper-back strength, and postural control.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up with a dumbbell in each hand, feet about hip-width apart, and a soft bend in the knees.
  2. Hinge at the hips until your torso is angled forward, keeping your spine long, chest open, and neck neutral. Let the dumbbells hang below your shoulders with palms facing inward.
  3. Row upward by driving your elbows out and slightly back rather than keeping them close to your ribs. Squeeze the rear shoulders and upper back as the dumbbells approach the sides of your upper torso.
  4. Pause briefly without shrugging the shoulders toward the ears or twisting the torso.
  5. Lower slowly until the arms are straight and the shoulder blades return to a controlled position. Repeat while maintaining the same hip hinge.

Technique tips

  1. Use a light, controllable load. The rear deltoids respond well to strict movement rather than heavy swinging.
  2. Lead with the elbows. Keep them flared outward to maintain the rear-delt emphasis.
  3. Keep the torso still. Avoid using momentum, rounding the lower back, or lifting the chest to finish a repetition.
  4. Breathe steadily. Exhale as you row and inhale as you lower under control.
