Dumbbell Seated Wrist Curl Neutral Grip

The dumbbell seated neutral-grip wrist curl is an isolation exercise performed while seated with the dumbbell held in a neutral, thumb-up grip. It primarily trains the forearm muscles that control the wrist and grip. It can support forearm strength, wrist control, and balanced arm development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Sit upright on a stable seat with your feet flat on the floor, holding one dumbbell at your side in a neutral grip with the thumb pointing upward.
  2. Rest the working forearm on the corresponding thigh and keep the elbow bent and still. Let the hand extend just beyond the knee so the wrist can move freely.
  3. Lower the dumbbell slowly by allowing the wrist to move down only as far as is comfortable, while keeping the forearm supported.
  4. Curl the wrist upward in a controlled motion without lifting the forearm or swinging the dumbbell. Pause briefly, then lower under control and repeat before switching sides.

Technique tips

  1. Use a light load and prioritize a smooth wrist motion; heavy weights often cause unwanted swinging.
  2. Keep the forearm supported and the elbow still so the movement comes from the wrist rather than the shoulder or elbow.
  3. Stay in a comfortable range. Stop if the movement causes sharp pain, numbness, or persistent discomfort.
