Farmer’s Carry

The Farmer's Carry is a loaded walking exercise performed while holding heavy dumbbells at your sides. It primarily develops grip and forearm strength while challenging the upper legs, shoulders, trunk stability, and overall work capacity. It supports strength, posture, and practical carrying ability.

Instructions

  1. Choose two dumbbells that you can hold securely while walking with controlled posture.
  2. Stand between the dumbbells with feet about hip-width apart. Brace your trunk, hinge at the hips and bend the knees to grasp the handles.
  3. Stand up smoothly by pushing through the floor. Keep the dumbbells at your sides, shoulders down and back, chest tall, and spine neutral.
  4. Walk forward with short, controlled steps. Keep your gaze ahead, breathe steadily, and avoid leaning, twisting, or letting the weights swing.
  5. Finish under control by stopping, hinging and bending the knees, then placing both dumbbells on the floor. Do not drop them.

Technique tips

  1. Start lighter than expected. Increase the load only when you can walk without leaning or losing hand control.
  2. Keep the ribs stacked over the pelvis and avoid shrugging the shoulders toward the ears.
  3. Use a clear path with stable, level flooring and enough room to turn safely.
  4. Stop the set if grip fails, posture breaks down, or the dumbbells begin striking your legs.
