Dumbbell Wrist Curl Neutral Grip

The neutral-grip dumbbell wrist curl is an isolation exercise performed by moving the wrist while holding a dumbbell with a handshake-style grip. It primarily trains the forearm muscles that control the wrist and grip. It can support forearm strength, wrist control, and balanced arm development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Sit upright on a stable seat and hold one light dumbbell at your side with a neutral, handshake-style grip and the thumb pointing upward.
  2. Support your forearm on your thigh so the wrist extends just beyond the knee; keep the elbow still and the forearm facing inward.
  3. Lower the dumbbell slowly by allowing the wrist to move through a comfortable range while maintaining the neutral grip.
  4. Curl the wrist back in a controlled motion, using the forearm muscles rather than lifting the elbow or swinging the arm.
  5. Pause briefly at the top, then lower under control for all repetitions before switching sides.

Technique tips

  1. Use a light load. The wrist has a short lever arm, so heavy dumbbells can quickly compromise control.
  2. Keep the elbow still. If the elbow or shoulder moves, reduce the load and focus on wrist motion.
  3. Move smoothly. Avoid bouncing through the bottom position or forcing an uncomfortable range of motion.
  4. Keep the grip neutral. Do not rotate the forearm as you curl the wrist.
