Dumbbell Wrist Curl Palms Up

The dumbbell palms-up wrist curl is an isolation exercise for the forearm flexors. With the forearms supported and palms facing up, the wrists curl the dumbbells upward through a controlled range of motion. It helps build forearm strength, muscular endurance, and grip support for lifting and daily hand-intensive tasks.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up: Sit on a bench and hold a dumbbell in each hand with your palms facing up.
  2. Support your forearms: Rest your forearms across your thighs or a bench, with your wrists just beyond the edge and your elbows still.
  3. Lower under control: Let the dumbbells roll slightly toward your fingers as you extend your wrists comfortably, while maintaining a secure grip.
  4. Curl the wrists: Flex only your wrists to raise the dumbbells as high as is comfortable; keep the forearms pressed into the support.
  5. Finish the repetition: Briefly squeeze the forearm muscles at the top, then lower slowly to the starting position.
  6. Repeat safely: Use a light, controllable load and stop if you feel sharp pain in the wrist or hand.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the elbows still: Movement should come from the wrists rather than lifting with the forearms or shoulders.
  2. Control the bottom: Do not force a deep wrist stretch or allow the dumbbells to slip from your fingers.
  3. Use modest loads: Forearm muscles respond well to smooth, controlled repetitions; excessive weight often reduces the range of motion.
  4. Keep wrists aligned: Avoid twisting the wrists inward or outward while curling.
