Elliptical Training

Elliptical training is a low-impact cardiovascular workout performed on an elliptical machine, using smooth stepping motions. It primarily develops aerobic endurance while involving the legs and, when moving handles are used, the arms and upper body. It can support general fitness, calorie expenditure, and cardiovascular conditioning.

Instructions

  1. Set up the machine: Step onto the pedals while holding the fixed handles, then select a low resistance and a comfortable starting pace.
  2. Find your posture: Stand tall with your head neutral, chest open, and core gently braced. Keep both feet flat and centered on the pedals.
  3. Begin smoothly: Push and pull through a continuous, controlled stepping path. If using moving handles, coordinate the arms with the opposite leg.
  4. Maintain a steady effort: Pedal at a pace you can control without leaning heavily on the handles or rounding your back.
  5. Adjust gradually: Increase resistance, incline, or pace in small steps only after your movement remains smooth and stable.
  6. Cool down safely: Reduce the pace and resistance for several minutes before stopping. Hold the handles when stepping off.

Technique tips

  1. Keep your feet connected: Avoid lifting the heels or toes off the pedals; use a smooth pressure through the whole foot.
  2. Do not lean on the handles: Light contact helps balance, but supporting your body weight on them can reduce effective leg work and compromise posture.
  3. Control intensity: Use resistance and pace that let you maintain a steady, quiet stride without jerking or bouncing.
  4. Breathe continuously: Keep breathing rhythmically and lower the intensity if you cannot maintain controlled breathing.
