Rowing Steady

Steady-state rowing is continuous rowing-machine exercise performed at a comfortable, sustainable pace. It primarily develops cardiovascular endurance while involving the legs, glutes, back, arms, and core. It supports aerobic fitness, pacing control, and low-impact conditioning.

Instructions

  1. Set the rowing machine’s foot straps securely across the widest part of your feet, then sit tall with a relaxed grip on the handle.
  2. Begin each stroke at the catch: bend the knees, hinge slightly forward from the hips, and keep the arms straight.
  3. Drive by pressing through the legs first, then swing the torso to a slight backward lean and finally pull the handle to the lower ribs.
  4. Recover in reverse order: extend the arms, hinge forward, then bend the knees to return smoothly to the catch.
  5. Maintain a comfortable, even pace that you can sustain; keep the chain level and avoid rushing the slide.

Technique tips

  1. Legs, body, arms on the drive; use the reverse sequence on recovery.
  2. Keep the stroke rate controlled rather than pulling harder or rushing to raise intensity.
  3. Stop or reduce effort if technique breaks down, especially if your lower back begins to round.
