Rowing Machine

Rowing machine exercise is a low-impact, full-body cardiovascular activity that uses a sliding seat, footrests, and handle to simulate rowing. It primarily develops cardiovascular endurance while involving the legs, back, glutes, arms, and core. It supports aerobic fitness, general conditioning, and calorie expenditure.

Instructions

  1. Set up the machine: Adjust the footrests so the straps cross over the widest part of your feet, then secure them. Set a resistance level that allows smooth, controlled strokes.
  2. Start at the catch: Sit tall with knees bent, shins close to vertical, arms straight, and the handle held lightly. Keep your shoulders relaxed and your back neutral.
  3. Drive with the legs: Push through your feet to extend your legs first while keeping the arms straight and the torso stable.
  4. Finish the stroke: After the legs are nearly straight, lean back slightly from the hips and pull the handle toward the lower ribs. Keep elbows close to the body.
  5. Recover in order: Extend the arms, hinge the torso forward, then bend the knees to slide smoothly back to the catch. Repeat at a controlled rhythm.

Technique tips

  1. Use the sequence: Drive with legs, then torso, then arms; return with arms, torso, then legs.
  2. Keep the stroke controlled: Avoid rushing forward on the recovery or bouncing at either end of the slide.
  3. Protect your back: Hinge from the hips and maintain a neutral spine rather than rounding the lower back.
  4. Breathe steadily: Exhale during the drive and inhale as you recover.
