Recumbent Bike

The recumbent bike is a stationary cycling machine with a supported, reclined seat and pedals positioned in front of the body. It develops cardiovascular endurance while working the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, and calves. It supports low-impact aerobic training, warm-ups, and steady or interval-based conditioning.

Instructions

  1. Adjust the machine: Set the seat so your knees remain slightly bent at the farthest point of each pedal stroke, and secure the foot straps.
  2. Sit supported: Place your back comfortably against the backrest, keep your pelvis centered, and hold the handles lightly if provided.
  3. Start smoothly: Begin pedaling at an easy resistance and steady cadence to warm up.
  4. Maintain alignment: Keep your knees tracking in line with your feet and avoid locking them at full extension.
  5. Choose the effort: Increase resistance or pace gradually for the planned steady session or intervals while maintaining controlled pedaling.
  6. Finish gradually: Lower the resistance and pedal easily for several minutes before stopping; unstrap one foot at a time before standing.

Technique tips

  1. Use a comfortable range: If your hips shift or your knees lock out, adjust the seat before increasing intensity.
  2. Pedal evenly: Keep the stroke smooth rather than pushing hard only on the downward phase.
  3. Build gradually: Raise resistance, pace, or session length in small steps so technique remains controlled.
  4. Breathe continuously: Keep breathing relaxed, especially as resistance increases.
