Kettlebell One-Arm Push Press

The kettlebell one-arm push press uses a shallow leg drive to help press a kettlebell from the rack position overhead with one arm. It primarily develops the shoulders and triceps while involving the legs, glutes, and trunk for force transfer and stability. It supports upper-body strength, overhead power, and coordination.

Instructions

  1. Set up: Stand tall with feet about hip-width apart. Clean the kettlebell to the rack position on one side, with the handle resting diagonally in the palm and the elbow close to the ribs.
  2. Brace: Keep the wrist neutral, chest tall, and ribs stacked over the pelvis. Tighten the trunk and keep the free arm out of the pressing path.
  3. Dip: Bend the knees and hips slightly while keeping both feet flat, heels grounded, and the torso upright.
  4. Drive and press: Forcefully extend the legs, then use that momentum to press the kettlebell overhead. Finish with the arm straight, biceps near the ear, and shoulder controlled.
  5. Return: Lower the kettlebell under control back to the rack position as you absorb the load with a soft bend in the knees.
  6. Repeat safely: Complete the planned repetitions on one side, then switch sides. Stop if you cannot maintain a stable overhead position or neutral wrist.

Technique tips

  1. Use a shallow dip: The knee bend should be short and vertical; avoid turning it into a squat or leaning forward.
  2. Let the legs start the lift: Drive through the floor before pressing with the arm, rather than trying to strict-press the load from a dead stop.
  3. Keep the kettlebell close: Maintain a compact rack position and a vertical pressing path to reduce unnecessary stress on the wrist and shoulder.
  4. Control the lockout: Do not force the shoulder forward or overarch the lower back to reach overhead. Exhale as the kettlebell passes the difficult part of the press.
