Kettlebell Snatch

The kettlebell snatch is a full-body explosive lift that moves a kettlebell from a swing between the legs to an overhead locked-out position in one continuous motion. It primarily trains the shoulders, glutes, and legs while also demanding hip power, grip strength, and core control. It supports strength, power, conditioning, and overhead stability.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Stand with feet about hip-width apart, with the kettlebell on the floor slightly in front of you.
  2. Hinge at the hips, keep your back neutral, grip the handle with one hand, and hike the kettlebell back between your legs.
  3. Drive forcefully through the floor and extend the hips to propel the kettlebell upward; keep the arm connected to the body rather than pulling early with the shoulder.
  4. As the kettlebell rises, guide it close to the body and smoothly rotate your hand around the handle so it rests softly on the back of the forearm.
  5. Finish standing tall with the arm locked overhead, wrist neutral, shoulder stable, and ribs stacked over the pelvis.
  6. Lower the kettlebell under control into a swing, then repeat. Complete the planned repetitions before switching sides.

Technique tips

  1. Use hip drive: the kettlebell should be propelled primarily by hip extension, not a large arm pull.
  2. Keep it close: a close path reduces impact on the forearm and improves control overhead.
  3. Protect the wrist: let the hand rotate around the handle rather than allowing the kettlebell to flip onto the forearm.
  4. Choose an appropriate load: learn the motion with a weight you can control without losing a neutral spine or stable overhead position.
