Kettlebell Clean

The kettlebell clean lifts a kettlebell from a hanging position into the front-rack position using a coordinated hip drive and controlled pull. It primarily develops the glutes, hamstrings, and quads while also challenging the back, shoulders, forearms, and core. It supports lower-body power, total-body coordination, and strength conditioning.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up: Stand with feet about hip-width apart and place the kettlebell on the floor slightly in front of you. Hinge at the hips with a neutral spine and grip the handle with one hand.
  2. Hike the bell: Pull the kettlebell back between your thighs while keeping the shoulder packed and the free arm out for balance.
  3. Drive from the hips: Forcefully extend your hips and knees to send the kettlebell upward; keep it close to your body rather than curling it with the arm.
  4. Receive softly: As the bell becomes weightless, guide your hand around the handle and let the kettlebell roll quietly onto the outside of your forearm in the front-rack position. Keep the wrist neutral and elbow near your ribs.
  5. Finish and return: Stand tall with ribs stacked over the pelvis, then guide the bell down, hinge at the hips, and repeat. Complete the same number of repetitions on each side.
  6. Use control: Start with a light kettlebell and stop if you cannot keep the bell close, the wrist comfortable, or the spine neutral.

Technique tips

  1. Keep it close: A close bell path reduces pulling stress on the shoulder and helps the kettlebell settle gently in the rack.
  2. Do not bang the forearm: Insert the hand around the handle as the bell rises instead of letting it flip over the wrist.
  3. Use a hip hinge: Load the hips with a small knee bend; avoid turning the movement into a deep squat or an arm curl.
  4. Breathe and brace: Brace before the hip drive and exhale under control as you reach the rack position.
