Kettlebell One-Arm Clean

The kettlebell one-arm clean moves a kettlebell from a hanging position to the front-rack position using a powerful hip drive. It primarily trains the glutes and legs while challenging the back, shoulders, forearms, and core. It supports full-body power, coordination, and strength conditioning.

Instructions

  1. Stand with feet about hip-width apart, placing a kettlebell on the floor slightly in front of one foot.
  2. Hinge at the hips with a neutral spine, grip the handle with one hand, and pack the working shoulder down away from the ear.
  3. Hike the kettlebell back between the legs, keeping the forearm close to the body and the free arm out for balance.
  4. Drive through the feet and extend the hips sharply to send the kettlebell upward; keep the arm relaxed rather than pulling it high.
  5. As the kettlebell rises, guide it close to the body and rotate the hand around the handle so the bell settles softly on the outside of the forearm in the front-rack position.
  6. Stand tall with the wrist neutral, elbow close to the ribs, and core braced, then return the kettlebell under control to the hang for the next repetition. Switch sides as planned.

Technique tips

  1. Use hip power: The clean is driven by a hip hinge and extension, not by curling the kettlebell with the arm.
  2. Keep it close: Let the kettlebell travel close to the torso to reduce impact on the forearm at the rack.
  3. Avoid a wrist flip: Rotate the hand around the handle so the bell wraps softly onto the forearm rather than crashing over it.
  4. Control the load: Start with a weight you can rack smoothly and keep the spine neutral throughout every repetition.
