Kettlebell Single-Leg Deadlift

The kettlebell single-leg deadlift is a unilateral hip-hinge exercise performed while balancing on one leg and lowering a kettlebell toward the floor. It primarily trains the glutes and hamstrings while challenging core control, balance, and hip stability. It supports lower-body strength, coordination, and controlled movement mechanics.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Stand tall holding a kettlebell in one hand, with the feet about hip-width apart.
  2. Shift your weight onto the opposite leg and soften that knee; brace your abdomen and keep your spine neutral.
  3. Hinge at the hips by sending the hips back as the kettlebell lowers close to the standing leg and the free leg reaches straight behind you.
  4. Lower with control only as far as you can maintain a level pelvis, balanced stance, and neutral back.
  5. Drive through the standing foot and squeeze the glute to return upright, keeping the kettlebell close to your body.
  6. Complete all repetitions on one side, then switch sides. Stop if you lose balance or cannot keep the back neutral.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the hips square: avoid opening the pelvis toward the lifted leg.
  2. Use a manageable load: balance and a controlled hip hinge matter more than lifting heavy.
  3. Keep the kettlebell close: letting it drift forward can pull you out of position.
  4. Breathe steadily: inhale on the way down and exhale as you stand.
