Kettlebell Double Windmill

The double kettlebell windmill is a loaded hip-hinge movement performed with one kettlebell locked overhead and a second kettlebell held at the side. It primarily trains the obliques and core while challenging shoulder stability, hip mobility, and control through the glutes and legs. It supports trunk strength, coordination, and resilient overhead positioning.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set up: Stand with feet about shoulder-width apart. Clean two kettlebells, press one overhead to a locked-out arm, and hold the second kettlebell at your side with a straight arm.
  2. Brace and look up: Pack the overhead shoulder, keep the overhead wrist neutral, and keep your eyes on that kettlebell. Brace your abdomen and keep most of your weight through the leg below the overhead arm.
  3. Hinge and rotate: Push your hips back while keeping a soft bend in both knees. Turn your torso slightly toward the overhead side and slide the lower kettlebell down toward the floor without rounding your back.
  4. Return with control: Stop at the deepest position you can control while the overhead arm remains vertical. Press through your feet, extend the hips, and return to standing; complete repetitions evenly on both sides.

Technique tips

  1. Use a light load first: This movement demands shoulder control and hip mobility; increase load only after each position is steady.
  2. Keep the overhead bell stacked: Maintain a vertical wrist, elbow, shoulder, and kettlebell rather than letting the arm drift forward or sideways.
  3. Move through the hips: Avoid turning it into a side bend or rounding the lower back. Stop the descent if you lose tension, balance, or the overhead position.
