Kettlebell Side Bend

The kettlebell side bend is a standing trunk-flexion exercise performed while holding a kettlebell at one side. It primarily trains the obliques, with the forearm working to hold the load. It can support core strength, controlled lateral trunk movement, and grip endurance.

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with feet about hip-width apart and hold a kettlebell in one hand at your side; keep the other arm relaxed.
  2. Brace your core, keep your chest lifted, and maintain a neutral head and neck position.
  3. Slowly bend sideways toward the kettlebell, allowing it to travel down the outside of your leg without rotating your torso.
  4. Reverse the motion by contracting the obliques to return to a tall, neutral standing position; do not lean past neutral to the opposite side.
  5. Complete the repetitions with control, then switch the kettlebell to the other hand and perform the same number on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Use a light load first and prioritize smooth, controlled movement over a deep bend.
  2. Keep your hips and shoulders square; avoid twisting or shifting your weight into one foot.
  3. Move only through a comfortable range and stop if you feel sharp discomfort in your back or side.
  4. Exhale as you return upright and avoid using momentum to lift the kettlebell.
