Leverage Shoulder Press

The leverage shoulder press is a machine-based overhead pressing exercise performed along a guided path. It primarily trains the deltoids, with the triceps assisting to extend the elbows. It supports shoulder strength and upper-body pressing development while providing more stability than a free-weight press.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Adjust the machine so the seat places the handles around shoulder height and the back pad supports your torso.
  2. Sit tall with your feet firmly on the floor, grasp the handles, and keep your head, upper back, and hips in contact with the pads.
  3. Press upward by driving the handles overhead in a smooth motion while keeping your wrists neutral and your core braced.
  4. Stop just short of forcefully locking the elbows, then lower slowly until the handles return to shoulder level without letting the weight stack slam.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load: choose resistance that allows smooth, controlled repetitions without shifting your body on the seat.
  2. Keep your lower back against the pad; do not arch excessively or use momentum to press the handles.
  3. Exhale as you press and inhale during the controlled return.
