Smith Machine Deltoid Row

The Smith Machine Deltoid Row is an upright pulling movement in which the fixed bar travels close to the body toward the upper chest. It primarily trains the deltoids, with the upper back and biceps assisting. The guided bar path can help build shoulder strength and muscle while allowing controlled technique.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set the Smith bar around mid-thigh height and select a light, controllable load.
  2. Stand tall with feet about hip-width apart and grip the bar slightly wider than shoulder width, palms facing your body.
  3. Brace your abdomen, keep your chest tall, and begin with straight wrists and relaxed shoulders.
  4. Pull the bar upward close to your torso, leading with the elbows until the bar reaches upper-chest height or your comfortable shoulder range.
  5. Pause briefly, then lower the bar slowly to the starting position without leaning back or swinging.

Technique tips

  1. Use a comfortable range: stop before shoulder discomfort; higher is not necessarily better.
  2. Keep the bar close and lead with the elbows rather than curling the wrists.
  3. Use a load that permits a slow descent and a stable, upright torso.
