Smith Machine Shoulder Press

The Smith Machine Shoulder Press is a guided overhead pressing exercise performed with a bar fixed to vertical rails. It primarily trains the deltoids, especially the front and middle portions, while the triceps assist with elbow extension. It supports shoulder strength and upper-body pressing development.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Set the Smith bar to about upper-chest height and choose a light load. Stand beneath the bar with feet about hip-width apart and the bar in front of your shoulders.
  2. Grip the bar slightly wider than shoulder width, brace your abdomen, and keep your ribs stacked over your pelvis.
  3. Unrack the bar and press it upward in a controlled path until your arms are nearly straight overhead.
  4. Keep your head neutral and avoid leaning backward or forcefully locking the elbows at the top.
  5. Lower the bar slowly to the upper chest or chin level while keeping the wrists stacked over the forearms, then repeat.
  6. After the final repetition, return the bar to the rack hooks securely before releasing your grip.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable load: The fixed bar path does not replace controlled technique.
  2. Keep the torso stacked: Squeeze the abdomen and glutes to limit excessive lower-back arching.
  3. Control the descent: Lower smoothly rather than dropping the bar into the bottom position.
