Machine Assisted Chin-Up

The machine-assisted chin-up uses a counterweight machine to reduce the amount of body weight lifted during a chin-up. It primarily trains the lats and upper back, with strong assistance from the biceps and forearms. It helps build vertical pulling strength and progress toward unassisted chin-ups.

Instructions

  1. Set the assistance: Select a counterweight that lets you complete controlled repetitions. More selected assistance makes the movement easier.
  2. Set up: Step onto the machine platform or kneel on the pad as designed, then grasp the handles with an underhand, shoulder-width grip. Start with arms extended and feet or knees secure on the pad.
  3. Pull up: Brace your abdomen, keep your chest lifted, and draw your elbows down toward your sides. Pull until your chin reaches or passes handle height without craning your neck.
  4. Lower with control: Descend smoothly until your arms are nearly straight and your shoulders remain controlled; do not drop into the bottom position.
  5. Finish safely: Complete the set, return the pad carefully to its resting position, and step off only once it is stable.

Technique tips

  1. Choose appropriate assistance: Use enough assistance to avoid swinging, kicking, or shortening the range of motion.
  2. Lead with the elbows: Think of drawing your elbows toward your ribs rather than pulling only with your hands.
  3. Keep the torso quiet: Avoid excessive leaning back, leg movement, or shrugging toward your ears.
  4. Progress gradually: Reduce the assistance only when you can perform consistent, controlled repetitions through a comfortable range.
