Machine Incline Chest Press

The machine incline chest press is a seated pressing exercise performed on an inclined chest press machine. It primarily trains the upper chest, with assistance from the front shoulders and triceps. It supports upper-body pressing strength and chest muscle development while the machine provides a guided movement path.

Instructions

  1. Adjust the machine so the seat places the handles at about upper-chest level and the back pad supports your entire back.
  2. Select a manageable load, sit with your feet flat on the floor, and keep your head, upper back, and hips against the pads.
  3. Grip the handles evenly with wrists straight. Draw your shoulder blades gently back and down without excessively arching your lower back.
  4. Exhale and press the handles forward and upward along the machine path until your arms are nearly straight; do not forcefully lock the elbows.
  5. Inhale and return slowly until you feel a comfortable chest stretch while keeping your shoulders controlled and your back in contact with the pad.
  6. Repeat smoothly, then secure the handles before getting out of the machine.

Technique tips

  1. Set the seat correctly: handles that are too high or low can shift stress away from the upper chest.
  2. Control both phases: press without bouncing and use a slower return rather than letting the weight stack pull your arms back.
  3. Keep shoulders stable: avoid shrugging or allowing the shoulders to roll far forward at the bottom.
