Monkey Bar Traverse

The monkey bar traverse is a bodyweight hanging movement in which you travel hand over hand across overhead bars. It primarily develops grip strength, the forearms, lats, shoulders, and upper-body pulling control. It supports upper-body endurance, coordination, and confidence in hanging and climbing movements.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Check the bars for stability, dryness, and adequate clearance below before beginning.
  2. Stand beneath the first bar, reach up, and take a secure overhand grip with both hands.
  3. Lift your feet from the ground and create a controlled, comfortable hang with your shoulders active rather than shrugged toward your ears.
  4. Reach one hand to the next bar, establish a full grip, then transfer the other hand forward one bar at a time.
  5. Keep your torso controlled and use only a small, deliberate swing; continue until the end, then land softly with bent knees or step down safely.

Technique tips

  1. Grip before moving: fully close your hand around each bar before releasing the previous one.
  2. Keep the shoulders active and the ribs controlled; avoid hanging passively with a heavily arched lower back.
  3. Use a small swing only if needed for reach, not a large uncontrolled kip.
  4. Stop when grip quality declines, especially if your hands are slipping or your shoulders become painful.
