Dead Hang

The dead hang is a static hold performed while hanging from an overhead bar with straight arms. It develops grip and forearm endurance while challenging the shoulders, upper back, and trunk to maintain a controlled hanging position. It can support pull-up preparation, hanging tolerance, and upper-body control.

Instructions

  1. Set the bar height so you can reach it safely from a stable step or by a small controlled jump.
  2. Grip the bar with both hands about shoulder width apart, using a secure overhand grip, and let your feet leave the floor.
  3. Hang with straight arms, keeping your body long and your legs still; cross the ankles or bend the knees if needed to clear the floor.
  4. Keep a comfortable, controlled shoulder position and avoid forcefully shrugging or relaxing into an uncomfortable position.
  5. Breathe steadily and hold for the planned time without swinging.
  6. End the hold before your grip fails, then place your feet down or step onto a stable support under control.

Technique tips

  1. Use a manageable hold time. Build duration gradually rather than hanging until an uncontrolled grip failure.
  2. Stay still. Begin each hold without momentum and limit swinging by keeping the ribs and legs controlled.
  3. Choose a safe exit. Use a box or step when needed instead of dropping from the bar, especially as fatigue increases.
  4. Stop if you feel sharp pain, numbness, or an uncomfortable pulling sensation in the shoulders, elbows, wrists, or hands.
