Single-Leg Balance

Single-Leg Balance is a static exercise performed by standing on one foot while maintaining controlled posture. It primarily develops balance, ankle and lower-leg stability, and coordination, with support from the glutes and core. It can help improve body control for everyday movement and athletic activities.

Instructions

  1. Set up: Stand tall on a firm, level surface with your feet about hip-width apart. Keep your gaze fixed on a point ahead.
  2. Shift your weight: Transfer your weight gradually onto one foot, keeping that foot flat and spreading pressure through the heel, ball of the foot, and toes.
  3. Lift the free foot: Slowly lift the other foot off the floor without leaning the torso. Keep a soft bend in the supporting knee.
  4. Hold alignment: Keep your pelvis level, chest tall, and core gently braced. Let your arms rest at your sides or extend slightly for balance.
  5. Maintain control: Breathe normally and hold the position for a controlled duration without gripping the floor excessively with your toes.
  6. Switch sides: Lower the raised foot with control, then repeat on the other leg. Use a wall or sturdy support lightly if needed.

Technique tips

  1. Use a tripod foot: Keep contact through the heel, base of the big toe, and base of the little toe rather than rolling to one edge.
  2. Avoid hip dropping: Keep the pelvis level; do not let it shift or collapse toward the lifted-leg side.
  3. Progress gradually: First increase hold time, then reduce hand support. Only add challenges that you can control safely.
  4. Choose a safe setup: Practice near stable support and step down if you lose balance instead of twisting to recover.
