Ankle Hops

Ankle hops are small, quick vertical jumps performed primarily by springing through the ankles while keeping the knees relatively straight. They develop calf strength, ankle stiffness, coordination, and reactive lower-leg power for running and jumping activities. This plyometric drill can support lower-body explosiveness and efficient ground contact mechanics.

Instructions

  1. Warm up with easy walking, marching, or light jogging, then choose a flat, firm surface with clear space around you.
  2. Stand tall with feet about hip-width apart, arms relaxed at your sides, and your weight balanced over the balls of your feet.
  3. Keep your knees soft but nearly straight, brace your trunk, and lift your heels to make a small vertical jump using a quick ankle push.
  4. Land quietly on the balls of your feet, allowing the heels to lower lightly while keeping your torso upright and your feet aligned.
  5. Rebound into the next small hop with a short, springy ground contact; keep the jumps low and controlled rather than trying to jump high.
  6. Stop if you lose quiet landings, ankle control, or balance, and rest fully before another set.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize quiet contacts: a soft, controlled landing is more important than jump height or speed.
  2. Keep the movement ankle-driven; avoid turning it into a deep knee bend or squat jump.
  3. Start with short sets and build volume gradually, especially if plyometric training is new to you.
  4. Use supportive footwear and a stable surface; avoid slippery, uneven, or very hard surfaces.
