Heel To Toe Walk

The heel-to-toe walk is a slow walking drill in which the heel of the front foot is placed directly in front of the toes of the back foot. It primarily develops balance, coordination, ankle and lower-leg control, and body awareness. It can support steadier walking and general balance training.

Instructions

  1. Choose a clear, level path near a wall, rail, or other stable support if needed.
  2. Stand tall with your head up, chest relaxed, and arms held slightly out to the sides for balance.
  3. Step forward slowly and place the heel of one foot directly in front of the toes of the other foot, as if walking on a line.
  4. Shift your weight smoothly onto the front foot, then repeat with the other foot while keeping each step controlled.
  5. Look forward and breathe normally; use light support or stop if you lose balance.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize control over speed. Slow, deliberate steps provide the balance challenge.
  2. Keep the trunk tall. Avoid leaning far forward or looking down at every step.
  3. Adjust the support level. Begin beside a stable surface and reduce hand support only when steady.
