Single-Leg Stance

The single-leg stance is a static balance exercise performed while standing on one foot. It develops balance, ankle and hip stability, and lower-leg control while engaging the glutes and core for support. It can help improve coordination and stability for daily movement and athletic activities.

Instructions

  1. Stand tall on a firm, level surface with your feet about hip-width apart. Keep a wall, chair, or stable support nearby if needed.
  2. Shift your weight gradually onto one foot, keeping that foot flat and spreading pressure through the heel, big toe, and little toe.
  3. Lift the other foot a few centimeters from the floor by bending the knee. Keep your pelvis level and avoid leaning toward the standing side.
  4. Hold the position with a tall posture, relaxed shoulders, and your gaze fixed on a point ahead. Keep the standing knee softly bent rather than locked.
  5. Step down with control when your form begins to deteriorate, then repeat on the other side for a similar duration.

Technique tips

  1. Use support when needed. Lightly touch a stable surface until you can hold the position safely without it.
  2. Keep the foot active. Avoid letting the standing arch collapse or gripping the floor excessively with your toes.
  3. Prioritize quality over time. End the hold when you repeatedly hop, twist, or lean to regain balance.
  4. Progress gradually. Increase hold time before making the surface less stable or reducing visual input.
