Peroneal Stretch

The peroneal stretch gently lengthens the muscles along the outside of the lower leg by moving the ankle inward. It is used to improve ankle and lower-leg mobility and may help support comfortable movement during walking, running, and lower-body training. The primary focus is the peroneal muscles of the lower leg.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Start seated on a stable chair or the floor with one leg extended comfortably in front of you.
  2. Keep the knee mostly straight, the heel supported, and the toes pointing upward.
  3. Slowly turn the sole of the foot inward, moving the little-toe side slightly toward the midline.
  4. Use your hand only if needed to guide the foot gently inward; do not force the ankle.
  5. Hold a mild stretch along the outside of the lower leg, breathing steadily, then release and repeat on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the sensation mild. Stretching should feel like gentle tension, not sharp pain, tingling, or numbness.
  2. Move slowly. Avoid bouncing or rapidly twisting the ankle at the end of the range.
  3. Keep the knee steady. Let the movement come from the ankle rather than rotating the entire leg.
  4. Breathe normally and reduce the range if you cannot relax into the position.
