Bodyweight Single-Leg Calf Raise

The bodyweight single-leg calf raise is a unilateral ankle-extension exercise performed by lifting the heel while balancing on one foot. It primarily trains the calves and also develops ankle stability, foot control, and lower-leg endurance. It supports calf strength, balance, and preparation for running and jumping activities.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Stand tall on one foot with the working foot pointing forward. Keep a light hand contact with a wall or stable object if needed for balance.
  2. Lift the other foot off the floor and keep the standing knee softly bent or straight without locking it. Brace your torso and keep your hips level.
  3. Press through the ball of the working foot to raise your heel as high as comfortably possible. Keep pressure centered through the forefoot and avoid rolling the ankle outward or inward.
  4. Pause briefly at the top, then lower the heel slowly and with control until it returns to the floor.
  5. Complete all repetitions on one side, then switch legs. Stop if balance loss or sharp pain prevents controlled movement.

Technique tips

  1. Use support strategically: light fingertip support can improve calf loading by reducing the balance demand.
  2. Control the lowering phase: do not drop the heel; a slow descent increases muscular control.
  3. Keep the foot aligned: avoid turning the foot out or letting the arch collapse to gain height.
