Wall Calf Stretch

The wall calf stretch is a standing stretch that lengthens the calf muscles using a wall for support. It primarily targets the gastrocnemius and soleus and can help improve ankle mobility and lower-leg flexibility. It is useful in warm-ups, cool-downs, and general mobility routines.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Face a wall and place both hands on it at about shoulder height.
  2. Step one foot back and keep that leg straight, with the back toes pointing forward and the heel flat on the floor.
  3. Bend the front knee slightly and shift your hips forward until you feel a gentle stretch in the back calf.
  4. Keep your torso tall and avoid turning the back foot outward or lifting the back heel.
  5. Hold the stretch with relaxed, steady breathing, then step out carefully and repeat on the other side.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the back knee straight to emphasize the gastrocnemius; bending it shifts the stretch more toward the soleus.
  2. Use a gentle intensity: stretching should feel like tension, not sharp pain or numbness.
  3. Keep both feet parallel and distribute pressure through the full back foot rather than rolling to its outer edge.
  4. Do not bounce; hold a stable position and breathe slowly.
