Ankle Circles

Ankle circles are a gentle mobility exercise performed by rotating the foot through a controlled circular range of motion at the ankle. They target the ankle joint and lower-leg muscles, helping improve ankle mobility, coordination, and readiness for activities such as walking, running, and lower-body training.

Instructions

  1. Choose a stable position: Sit upright on a chair or the floor, or stand while holding a stable support. Lift one foot so it is clear of the floor.
  2. Keep the lower leg still: Relax the toes and use the ankle to guide the movement rather than swinging the whole leg.
  3. Make slow circles: Rotate the foot in a smooth, comfortable circle for several repetitions, moving through a pain-free range.
  4. Reverse direction: Circle the foot the same number of times in the opposite direction.
  5. Change sides: Repeat with the other ankle, keeping the movement controlled and even.
  6. Stop if needed: Avoid forcing the range or continuing through sharp pain, pinching, or increasing discomfort.

Technique tips

  1. Prioritize ankle motion: Keep the knee and lower leg quiet so the circle comes primarily from the ankle joint.
  2. Use a controlled range: Make circles as large as you can comfortably control; do not force a stretch.
  3. Move both ways: Performing circles in each direction helps train control throughout the available range.
  4. Stay balanced when standing: Use a secure support and avoid twisting through the hips or torso.
