Single-Leg Butt Kick

The single-leg butt kick is a bodyweight drill in which one heel curls toward the glute while the body remains tall and stable. It primarily trains the hamstrings and can be used to warm up the legs, improve knee-flexion control, and build light muscular endurance. It also requires balance and support from the glutes and lower leg.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with feet about hip-width apart, arms relaxed, and your weight centered over the supporting foot.
  2. Lift one foot slightly from the floor and bend that knee, drawing the heel toward the same-side glute.
  3. Keep both thighs generally aligned and the pelvis level; let the knee point down rather than swinging it forward or out to the side.
  4. Lower the foot with control until the toes lightly touch the floor, then repeat on the same leg for the planned repetitions.
  5. Switch sides and perform the same number of repetitions. Hold a stable support lightly if balance limits your form.

Technique tips

  1. Keep the torso quiet: avoid leaning forward or arching the lower back to make the heel travel higher.
  2. Use a smooth range of motion: bring the heel only as close as you can without pinching or forcing the knee.
  3. Control the return: do not let the foot snap down or use momentum to swing the leg.
  4. Breathe normally and reduce the range or use support if you cannot stay balanced.
