Bodyweight Good Morning

The bodyweight good morning is a standing hip-hinge exercise performed without external load. It primarily trains the hamstrings and glutes while teaching controlled hip movement and trunk positioning. It can support posterior-chain strength, mobility, and preparation for loaded hinge exercises.

Demonstration

Instructions

  1. Stand tall with your feet about hip-width apart, knees soft, and hands crossed over your chest or placed lightly behind your head.
  2. Brace your trunk and keep a neutral spine, with your chest open and gaze directed slightly ahead and down.
  3. Push your hips straight back while maintaining a slight knee bend; let your torso tip forward as one unit rather than rounding your back.
  4. Lower until you feel a comfortable stretch in the hamstrings or until your torso is roughly parallel to the floor, without forcing the range.
  5. Press your feet into the floor and squeeze your glutes to drive the hips forward, returning to a tall standing position. Repeat with control.

Technique tips

  1. Hinge, do not squat: keep the shins nearly vertical and send the hips backward rather than bending deeply through the knees.
  2. Keep your neck in line with your spine; avoid lifting the chin or looking straight ahead throughout the hinge.
  3. Use only a range of motion you can control without back rounding, and move slowly in both directions.
